You know it is funny how quickly things become normal – so before we become too used to things here in Uganda we thought we should note some of the events that have taken us by surprise – so here are a few

speaking in morning prayers with a chicken interrupting with its clucks as it roamed through the room women kneeling as they shake your hand when they greet you – this is normally reserved when greeting men but also applies to expatriate women so Judith gets the same respect! being sung to (Ken) when being introduced to the first year nurse training students with a final line of "long live our programme manager" !

This last one we didn't experience ourselves but thought it is worth noting – women here are expected to be silent during child birth so when one of our medical elective students was attending a birth and the mother made a bit of noise the doctor present turned to the mother and motioned to her to be quiet! Apparently the mother in law is normally present at the birth and she expects silence !
