Seven days to go...

So after months of planning, I have held a coffee morning, studied African culture, learnt some Lugandan, been commissioned and packed…oh wait, I haven’t quite packed yet! A mammoth task which I will most likely put off until the last possible opportunity! But apart from this, I am pretty much ready to go!

Next Monday 17th September, I will be travelling to Kiwoko hospital in Uganda for a STEP (Short-Term Experience Placement) to join the Pharmacy team there and help out for three months. A placement like this has been on my heart for some time and I am so thankful God has brought me to this point and also for the support I have received from CMS Ireland, my family and my church with my preparations!

Having never been to Africa before, my expectations are founded on what stories I’ve been told, mixed in with the induction I have completed. What this has concocted in my mind is the following scenario. I will arrive feeling lucky to have survived the journey there having narrowly missed death several times on the road. I will be greeted with a long, sing-song, verbal table tennis type greeting by someone who is very friendly but turns up late. All this will be enveloped in a cloud of red dust with mosquitoes everywhere. Perhaps slightly exaggerated but I look forward to finding out the reality!

Am I excited? Yes – I can’t wait but at the same time my nerves are also growing! I would appreciate prayer as I travel next week and that I may settle in quickly and try to catch on to how to be a pharmacist in Uganda!

Hi Helen, Thinking of you today especially. We are wondering how things are going and if your experience is anything like what you imagined! No doubt you have been busy and challenged in many ways. Lots of love, The Gambles
