The rains have come

I am sitting in the gloom of a Saturday afternoon hardly able to see my computer due to the amount of water between me and the sun and certainly unable to carry on a conversation from the noise of water on the roof and ground.

It is good that I didnt go out on my bike today after all. Oddly I didnt go out because of the heat (24 Celsius) in the shade at 8am rather than because of the rain.

Most of the hospital water tanks are empty and people in the villages are having to walk large distances to find clean water. Many of the wells are dry. I obviously am not writing from Ireland!

Clinical surprises continue to abound:

A 40 year old man with leprosy A man with an interesting seronegative arthritis with skin rashes and iritis. Quite a few people with Meningitis this month most of whom have made an excellent recovery despite being deeply unconscious on admission. Our 15 year old orphan, born with HIV who has been very seriously unwell, and after a month in hospital and much complicated medical ingenuity and prayer should be fit to be discharged in the coming weeks.

Thankfully this week we had an obliging medical student who donated a unit of blood for a boy who would have died if he had to wait for a delivery from the transfusion service in Kampala.

New Hope (the orphanage a few miles away, with whom we maintain good relations) have installed a satellite internet connection, and are keen for us to have access to it. Thus I havent had to go to Kampala today in search of an internet connection and have been able to stay at home, tidy up some paper work, and hopefully hear Ireland beat the Scots on the world service in a few hours.

Looking forward to having David+ Spike from the office + Alan Abernethy visit this week. Should be good to catch up and pray, and give them a glimpse of our life and friends.

Thanks for reading. Rory

Hi Rory, Love the blog and sounds like you are having a challenging time! We met v briefly after your commissioning service before you left for Uganda. Hope its all going well! I just wanted to run something past you -to see what you thought. I am organising a gig at Ballyholme Parish in Sept. It will be 3 singer songwriters, Gareth Davies-Jones (my bro) Yvonne Lyons, (scottish and about to appear on Bob Harris Radio 2 - quite folky) and Neil Alton. Aim is to raise some dosh. And have decided that Kiwoko would be a good place to give it to. It will probably be about 400-500 pounds. Not stacks, but enough to help in some way. I wanted to know if there is anything specific we could use in the publicity for something you guys need in the hospital. Or is it better to give it to general support. Let me know what's best. Sometimes there are just things that you need which can't come from other funds for some reason. Thought this may help. If not - tell me! Thanks and hope to hear from you when you get a mo. Take care, Janet
