Good to be Home

Better late than never they say….. well late I am, but it is good to be blogging again at last.

I’m back in Uganda after a few weeks in the UK. It was great to see some folk, attend the CMSI mBrace conference, meet some hospital supporters, swim in the sea, walk in Cairn wood, organise some equipment to be brought out, have a fish supper with Granny, get some bits for the bike and house……

Sorry if you are one of the people whom I was sitting in Heathrow lamenting our lack of having met up – hopefully next time we will succeed.

And I have been a bit too busy for blogging for far too long– hopefully no longer so.

But to be honest it is now good to be home. While saying goodbye to my friends and family in Ireland is always hard (not least this time with the lovely Denise) it has been good to get back to Kiwoko.

Decisions

In some ways decisions about life are simper in rural Uganda – no worries about which TV programme to watch, which washing powder to use or where one should eat out tonight.

In some ways however significant decisions lurk at every corner. When out in the bush on my bicycle on Wednesday evening I stopped with a local family briefly. The three year old son was most unwell with pneumonia. As a GP in Ballyholme I would have phoned for an ambulance. After examination conducted with only my eyes and hands, and discussion with the family I left him in a mud hut without any treatment. The balance of allowing people to be responsible for themselves, and intervening in their lives is an unscripted path.

Snakes and ladders

I know that repeating my previous topic is a bit inappropriate for maintaining interest from anyone calling by to see whats going on, but An 8 foot python is a story. See the photograph.

Im afraid that I wasnt there when it was killed, but called today to visit some guys in a local homestead, and they wanted to show me the snake that had eaten one of their calves the day before – theyd kept it to show me. They were then amused by the efforts of myself and Dr Steve at joining in their tradit…

Snake Slayer

So I have come of age!

A 2 metre black mamba has been trampled underfoot.

Coming back from Luwero yesterday after a staff wedding, in the dark, the snake appeared in the headlights, and seconds later, with the weight of 9 people in a Pajero.little is left to the imagination.

The wedding was a great affair Dan + Saphina (now renamed Susan) from the lab had a packed service and busy reception with traditional dancin…

Happy Easter

Greetings from Kiwoko.

The nursing students had an "Easter Carol Service" last week. Actually it was more like an Passion play interspersed with Easter Hymns. I went along at the end of a long weekend working on the wards. To be honest, I would rather have gone home for some food and an early night. However it was just great. I was especially moved when Judas came in, and bounded over to Jesus to give him an enthusiastic salutation, hug and kiss…...to betray Him. I saw afresh how my …

The rains have come

I am sitting in the gloom of a Saturday afternoon hardly able to see my computer due to the amount of water between me and the sun and certainly unable to carry on a conversation from the noise of water on the roof and ground.

It is good that I didnt go out on my bike today after all. Oddly I didnt go out because of the heat (24 Celsius) in the shade at 8am rather than because of the rain.

Most of the hospital water tanks are empty and people in the villages are having to walk large distances to…

February in Kiwoko

Greetings from hot Uganda.

Just for a change it has been too long since I visited the blog. Sorry.

Just for a change I shall cite business as the reason.

Its a month since I have been in Kampala with adequate bandwidth to try uploading. With Dr Raul on leave, it was a bad time for Dr Peter to fall sick. Hes been off for a month now. We would have been completely stuck had Dr Steve (surgeon from Edinburgh) not arr…

Happy Christmas

Seasonal salutations! If you look hard it is possible to notice that it is Christmas in Kampala. A few shops have decorations on show.

In Kiwoko even on close inspection such decorations are absent. (Apart from Nialls wonderful mini-Christmas tree which he [perhaps not unreasonably] is rather proud of.)

There is excitement however. Schools are off (exams have been completed) and it is now the 2 month summer holid…

Uganda is hotter than Bangor

Greetings from a sweaty, dusty, fume-filled Kampala. I believe that storms are the order of the day in the British Isles at present, but Im not sure that Kampala is much of an improvement!

It has indeed been good to be back at Kiwoko. Our doctors have significantly increased in numbers 2 Ugandans Daniel and John, with us for six months at least, and two Scots David, a retired GP from Aberdeen with us until the …
