February in Kiwoko

Greetings from hot Uganda.

Just for a change it has been too long since I visited the blog. Sorry.

Just for a change I shall cite business as the reason.

Its a month since I have been in Kampala with adequate bandwidth to try uploading. With Dr Raul on leave, it was a bad time for Dr Peter to fall sick. Hes been off for a month now. We would have been completely stuck had Dr Steve (surgeon from Edinburgh) not arr…

Happy Christmas

Seasonal salutations! If you look hard it is possible to notice that it is Christmas in Kampala. A few shops have decorations on show.

In Kiwoko even on close inspection such decorations are absent. (Apart from Nialls wonderful mini-Christmas tree which he [perhaps not unreasonably] is rather proud of.)

There is excitement however. Schools are off (exams have been completed) and it is now the 2 month summer holid…

Uganda is hotter than Bangor

Greetings from a sweaty, dusty, fume-filled Kampala. I believe that storms are the order of the day in the British Isles at present, but Im not sure that Kampala is much of an improvement!

It has indeed been good to be back at Kiwoko. Our doctors have significantly increased in numbers 2 Ugandans Daniel and John, with us for six months at least, and two Scots David, a retired GP from Aberdeen with us until the …

Good to see you

Greetings from George Best airport.

Time flies when youre having fun.

Apparently Ive been in Northern Ireland for over two weeks now and its time to go home to Kiwoko.

Its been great to see lots of people and be overwhelmed by the good will and support for Kiwoko and the whole team there. If you are one of those folk then THANK YOU. It has been good to be encouraged. For all those who have enabled the practicaliti…

Hello!

Hello again. Sorry it has been such a long time!

Things here in Uganda are good.

John Morrice, a paediatrician friend whom I met in Liverpool last year joined us here for a few weeks. His assistance working with the juniors on Paeds ward and in the neonatal unit was most helpful. It was also good to have someone to chat clinical and ma…

Enjoy your week

We have so much to be grateful for.

It never ceases to amaze me how much Ugandans are full of fun and laughter at every opportunity. Most of the time they have so much less than many people in Ballyholme who think life is tough so much of the time.

Niall has a quote on his notice board: ‘Now and then, its good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy’.

Ugandans do that well: The boy who squeals with …

July Salutations

Its certainly never a dull moment here. In the last week weve had a boy attacked by a crocodile, a rare nerve complication caused by measles, 3 young girls with complications of back-street abortions, and the now reducing (as the rains are really passed now) numbers of Malaria, gastroenteritis and pneumonia. One of our biggest problems of late has been a lack of blood. A few patients have died because of it some because patients are brought to us so late that they are already severely unwell a…

Rory goes to prison

And so I spent this afternoon in prison with our mission team preaching to the inmates. They were mostly young lads, in for various crimes some simply falling out with someone with influence or money. They listened to my rendition of the prodigal son, with Shadrachs interpretation and appropriate embellishment, and then about of them said they wanted to become Christians not what I was really expecting so God is real and meets people who need Him then! These guys dont really have much going…

Donner und Blitzen

Greetings again from thundery Kiwoko.

Cultural conditioning is great. While dealing with a sick baby last night there was a large explosion in the compound. Everyone seemed at ease and then I realized that it was just incredibly loud thunder right at hand and not an explosion at all! Sadly the child died. Not all our treatment has a successful outcome. However the mother could see that we had tried hard and all that could be done for the little boy had been performed well. It is always a challe…
