Donner und Blitzen
Greetings again from thundery Kiwoko.
Cultural conditioning is great. While dealing with a sick baby last night there was a large explosion in the compound. Everyone seemed at ease and then I realized that it was just incredibly loud thunder right at hand and not an explosion at all! Sadly the child died. Not all our treatment has a successful outcome. However the mother could see that we had tried hard and all that could be done for the little boy had been performed well. It is always a challe…

Palm Sunday Greetings from Kiwoko
Palm Sunday greetings from Uganda.
Rev. Simon, the hospital chaplain was preaching in church this morning, and there was palm branch waving aplenty. My stove and fridge are now fully operational, so I managed to produce a curry for dinner last night and not a bad one if I may say so myself.
The rains are now well under way most days it rains for a while more often than not with torrential rain, thunder and lightning. With the rains the incidence of malaria and diarrhoeal diseases, particu…

Kiwoko is great
Greetings from Uganda
It is good to be here. While I will have much to learn for many months to come in terms of personnel, clinical and management issues, Kiwoko hospital is a good place with many committed staff.
Birdlife and tropical thunderstorms are fantastic.
Bunch of bananas costs 6 pence.
There are lots of really poor and sick…

Greetings from Kiwoko
Greetings from Kiwoko. It is good to be here working with such a team of committed Ugandans. Internet connection is a bit weak, so I shall be brief. People, food, thunderstorms, birds, sleep, all wonderful. We had 3 public holidays in my first week here! Though in reality they dont affect a working hospital too much, but certainly a point of local humour. Lots of sick babies, mothers, children and adults in the hospital. Rains have started so we will be getting busier over the next few weeks. Ch…

Time to go at last! This afternoon I head for Kiwoko hospital. Preparation and link parish visits have been lots of fun, meeting lots of good people. Thanks to everyone for all your prayers, support, gifts, encouragement. Please keep the prayers for me and the hospital going for the next few weeks especially as I settle in to very different medicine and get to know the team at the hospital and start to learn the language. keep in touch. Good to be back
Its been a long time since I was bloging, so its good to be back. I was in the surgery this morning where I worked for the last few years. It was good to see the folk there, but also obvious that time has moved on, and after six month of preparation, change and development, Im looking forward to getting to Kiwoko and joining the team at the hospital.
The next few weeks are a blend of visits to partner parishes (which…

Don't steal the Arc of the Covenant
Greetings from civilization. Things are going well here. Had a big walk on the beach at Crosbie this afternoon and enjoyed a poke before walking back to the car. Good to get out after a week at the books. Last weekend mum was over for her birthday and Connor (big brother) and family were up from London – a good time indeed. Next weekend Dads coming over to go up and walk in the lake district.

well. well, well....
Holy communion at St. Colman’s church in Dunmurry was a great way to spend a Sunday morning.
St. Colman’s almost equates to my second parish after Ballyholme on account of 11 years enjoying seeing God work in youth and children’s work through the Bodybuilders children's summer club and Dunmurry Crusaders. It’s good to feel genuinely welcomed by a rector who’s more of a friend and recognise …

Back on line
With some building work in my flat things have been a bit chaotic in the last week. I've moved rooms twice and managed to do two exams this week as well. Good to be back in a freshly painted room without bedbugs or a leaking roof and with an internet connection. I have been really struck recently how well off I am. I am enabled to spend 3 months learning lots about fascinating medicine which is directly relevant to what I expect to be doing next year. I have some space away from on call comm…
