Following recent atrocities carried out by the Lord’s Resistance Army in Southern Sudan David Gough, CMS Ireland’s Regional Mission Partner for Northern and Central Africa, launches an emergency appeal for our partners in Maridi Diocese.

MARIDI EMERGENCY RELIEF APPEAL

Dear Friends,

As many of you will be aware the start of 2009 has been extremely difficult for our partners in Southern Sudan – especially in Maridi Diocese.

Renewed activity by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) – a dissident rebel group originally from Northern Uganda – has resulted in more than 60 deaths, over 50 abductions and the displacement of more than 10,000 people from rural areas in Maridi County into Maridi town.

In light of these atrocities CMS Ireland is launching an MARIDI EMERGENCY RELIEF APPEAL to help the church provide practical support to ravaged rural communities.

CMS Ireland has been in regular contact with Bishop Justin Badi who reports that the church is now responsible for looking after over 5,000 of the people forced to flee their homes as a result of the recent violence.

CMS Ireland supporters and members have already committed themselves to a series of prayer initiatives and – after consultation with Bishop Justin – we are now in the process of responding to a request for £60,000 of emergency relief funds which will help the church respond to the needs of the most vulnerable in their community.

CMS Ireland has already transferred £15,000 to assist the church as it looks to provide blankets, food, cooking equipment and medicines for those most profoundly affected by the events of recent weeks. These funds have been received by our partners and are making a real difference to those sheltering in local schools and churches.

We have also committed to sending a further £15,000 to assist in the longer-term, as communities begin the slow process of rebuilding their lives and moving home.

As someone with an existing interest in and a commitment to our work in Southern Sudan we would like to give you the opportunity to support our Global Partners at this time.

You money could be used as follows:

o £20 could provide emergency medicines for 100 people
o £50 could provide 10 jerry cans to carry clean water
o £75 could provide blankets for 10 homeless families
o £100 could provide emergency food rations for 10 families for 10 days

If you would like to give a gift please send your donation to either of CMS Ireland’s offices (cheques made payable to CMS Ireland) marking your envelope ‘Maridi Emergency Relief Appeal’ or click Donate and select ‘Global Partner: Maridi Diocese’ from the drop down menu. Please give whatever you can afford – even a small amount can make real impact in peoples’ lives.

Thank you again for your support,

David Gough
