Over the New Year CMS Ireland was saddened by the sudden and unfortunate news that Director of Mission, Ian Smith, had been diagnosed with a brain tumour.

CMS Ireland’s Board of Directors and Staff join with Ian’s many friends around the world in praying that he may know the Lord’s peace and healing.

During Ian’s absence the board have appointed, on an interim basis, two of the Society’s senior staff to take up Director of Mission duties. Brian Lavery and Colin Corbridge will be well known to many in the organisation and have been intimately involved in CMS Ireland’s work with churches around the world for the last ten years.

Speaking on behalf of the board, interim President, Clifford McSpadden, said, “We were shocked and surprised to learn of Ian’s illness and our thoughts and prayers are with him and the family as he prepares to begin his treatment.”

“We are fortunate to have two experienced pairs of hands already on board and we have every confidence that Brian and Colin can continue to provide leadership and guidance to the Society as it continues to develop over the next period of time.”

“In recent weeks CMS Ireland’s work has continued apace – building on the momentum that was so evident throughout the autumn. The staff team, members and volunteers have ensured that the essential work of supporting our Global Partners and resourcing the church in Ireland have remained our key priorities.”

“As we look forward to this New Year we would encourage churches and members to continue their prayerful support for the whole Society and for Ian’s long-term recovery. Thank you and God Bless you all.”
