Sowing the seeds...reaping the harvest

One of the main strands of CMS Ireland’s work involves providing opportunities for individuals to engage in mission service. In the past year, we have facilitated 6 META teams, 3 STEP programmes and a number of shorter-term Mission Placement Opportunities. These programmes have enabled individuals from Ireland to spend time with our Global Partners in Romania, Kenya, Nepal, Uganda and Burundi, and to bring encouragement and blessings. Over 80 people have gone global with CMS Ireland in 2009.

Our hope is that these experiences in different contexts and cultures will also have been a blessing to those who took part – that it will have enriched, challenged, stretched and blessed them.

While the summer is typically our busiest time in terms of people heading off on teams and other experiences, the planning, the preparation and the support for METAs and STEP volunteers continues all year round

As we celebrate Harvest, let us give thanks for all those who have given weeks, months and years to serve God with our Global Partners around the world. Let us also pray for those who are exploring possible mission placements, and what that might mean for them in the year ahead. These are things we have been very conscious about in some of our recent events.

On 9th October, CMS Ireland hosted its first momentum event in the Belfast office. STEP volunteers and members from recent teams gathered together to celebrate their experiences, to pray and to think about how they can keep the momentum going after their experiences with our Global Partners.

Going Global, CMS Ireland’s enquirer’s weekend, took place on 17th to 18th October in Tobermore. Going Global weekends are opportunities to take time to explore mission service more deeply through Bible study, fellowship and conversation. The weekend was attended by those considering taking part in a META team, a STEP placement or becoming a long term mission partner with CMS Ireland. Going Global is a great opportunity to talk with current mission partners, to share with others considering mission service and to create a space for questions and thoughts…and perhaps some answers. There will be another Going Global event in the spring, so keep checking the website and inMission magazine for the dates.

We hope that both of these events encouraged all those who took part to think more deeply about mission, whether it be short term or long term in other countries, and to consider how God’s mission applies and is outworked in our daily lives wherever we call home.

If you have been away with a META team or on a STEP programme, there are plenty of ways to stay involved:

With Global Partners: keep in touch with letters or email; pray for them and the country; consider visiting again; get involved in supporting one of their projects?

With CMS Ireland: come along to our prayer events on the first Monday (Belfast) or the first Tuesday (Dublin) of the month; look out for other events to attend; make sure you are informed by signing up for inMission, our quarterly magazine, for link letters and prayer cards for global partners, as well as other publications; check our website regularly for news, blogs – it highlights (nearly) everything we do!

Where you are: consider in your everyday, what difference mission has made to your life here; in your church, encourage others to get involved with Global mission; share your experiences with other people and encourage them to get involved.
