Madula's harrowing experience at the hands of the LRA

Just a few weeks ago Madula’s life was thrown into chaos as rebels from the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) attacked her village. In just a few minutes Madula lost two of her children, her husband and her father – hacked to death in an abhorrent act of random violence.

Such examples of man’s inhumanity to man are not uncommon in post conflict countries like Sudan and DR Congo, where the rule of law is impossible to enforce. Many people in Maridi Diocese have, within the last few months, experienced horrendous LRA atrocities – with thousands fleeing from their homes to the safety of Maridi town.

But in the midst of this darkness there is a flickering of hope. The local church, under the leadership of Bishop Justin Badi, is reaching out with love and compassion, providing emotional, spiritual and practical support to thousands of people like Madula.

In recent weeks the Church has been able to provide more than 10,000 people with shelter, blankets, food, cooking equipment, medicine and support as they come to terms with their loss and try to make plans for the future.

This has been a time when ‘partnership’ has counted. In the early part of 2009 CMS Ireland’s members and supporters have prayed for our partners and provided £35,000 of practical support to a vulnerable people. For almost six weeks the emergency funding from CMS Ireland was the only support that local people had access to. By standing alongside our partners we have been able to let people like Madula know that we care, that the body of Christ stands with her in her suffering.
