Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than the things you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.(Mark Twain)

CMS Ireland staff and volunteers have been developing an exciting new mission education resource for several years. The Society is delighted to announce that Discover is launching on 22nd (Belfast) and 23rd (Dublin) November 2010. We hope that this resource will play a significant part in helping churches and individuals engage more deeply and more actively in mission.

How did Discover come about?

A comprehensive consultation involving members, partners and supporting parishes of CMS Ireland revealed consistent requests for CMS Ireland to help people go deeper in their understanding of mission. Many of our members felt that mission had become a fringe issue in their churches. The Society felt challenged to help make mission matters for parishes and so the decision was made to produce a dynamic new resource.

In CMS Ireland, we see the support of the Global Church as part of a bigger picture. Mission is for all God’s people, wherever they are. And mission is most effective when it involves hearts and lives that are engaged…with God and with the world.

By investing in mission, we hope that the support given by the Church ‘here’ to the Church ‘there’ will flourish and thrive. But more than that, we long to see mission becoming part of the ordinary, everyday rhythm of faith and life for those in our churches.

Discover will compliment the various ways in which CMS Ireland seeks to resource the Church in Ireland, as we try to help mission move from the fringes to the centre of parish life.

So what is Discover?

Discover is a dynamic new resource that helps people explore the biblical background to mission. It has been designed for use by small groups – such as home groups or special mid-week gatherings – but can be adapted for use by individuals or larger groups.

The Discover programme involves 7 sessions, with each session focusing on a particular part of the biblical story of mission. The resource pack comprises specially produced material that is contemporary, innovative and challenging; it is ideally suited for a series of discussions or seminars. The pack contains a book, a DVD and a discussion guide and is accompanied by a dedicated website filled with practical support and helpful suggestions.
