Crazy fools

At a recent link church visit the minister asked us why we were giving up well paid jobs with secure futures, a comfortable home, and close friends and family to serve God in Uganda? Were we mad?

It’s a popular question and sometimes I think we are a bit mad (apparently it’s a pre-requisite for mission!). People often ask us if our jobs will be waiting for us ‘when’ we return and I must admit slight panic when I admit that no, they won’t be. Should we come home from Uganda in 2 or 3 years and choose to settle back into life in Northern Ireland – we have absolutely no idea how we will support ourselves. That is pretty crazy.

And when slight inconveniences here annoy us and I realise that we will have to get used to daily doing tasks the ‘old fashioned way’, one does ponder, “What are we letting ourselves in for?”

But then, following Christ has always been considered ‘foolishness’ by those who have not chosen it. 1 Cor 2v14 “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them.”

Jesus promised us life in all its fullness. Is a ‘full’ life knowing where you will be in five years time? Or is it trusting God to lead you on the adventure of a lifetime? Is a full life having all the things that make life ‘easier’, or is it discovering the abilities God has given us to make life better.

We have no idea what God has in store for us in Uganda, but we know what He can do and has done. So really – to not want to be a part of that, to choose to stay in worldly security – that would be the craziest thing we could ever do!

Very true guys. God is with us in everything so no need to be scared or consider yourselves crazy. You are both going to be wonderful ambassadors for Christ in Uganda!
