Ryan Adams, a 3rd year medical student at Aberdeen University, is currently on a Short Term Experience Placement (STEP) with CMS Ireland’s Global Partner, the Diocese of Egypt. Ryan is working in Harpur Memorial Hospital, Menouf, Egypt on a 5-week medical elective.

The Hospital was originally set-up at the end of the 19th Century by Dr. Frank Harpur, from Ireland, to provide essential medical care for the poor and vulnerable within Egyptian society. The hospital has maintained its Christian values and serves a largely Muslim community in the city of Menouf which is 1½ hours North West of Cairo.

Ryan is originally from Banbridge and grew up in Seapatrick Parish Church. Before starting his placement, he had this to say about the opportunity:

“I am really excited to be getting involved and helping out in this needy part of the world. Mission and outreach has always been stressed as an important part of modern Christian life. To be given the opportunity to travel to a different country, and use my skills to help, will be extremely rewarding. Being in Egypt will also give me a huge insight into a totally different medical setting, which should improve and strengthen my medical training through the huge variety of conditions I will encounter. The change in culture will also be particularly captivating for me.”

Please pray for Ryan in his remaining time in Egypt, that he will sense God’s hand of continued protection and leading for the future as he returns to complete his medical studies. Pray too for the Diocese of Egypt and the parishes in Ireland who support the diocese and its programmes.

CMS Ireland’s STEP programme gives people the chance to work alongside one of our Global Partners overseas for anything from 2 to 15 months. Each of these placements is unique, set up to match particular talents, needs and callings and to provide individuals with an insight into life, faith and mission in another part of the world.
