Earlier this week, I received a brief update from the Bishop of the Diocese of Maridi, South Sudan, Right Revd Justin Badi Arama. During the last number of weeks the bishop has been traveling throughout the six Archdeaconries to the 56 Parishes and 113 churches of the Diocese of Maridi confirming hundreds of people.

Confirmations in Ireland are certainly much easier than in South Sudan. Thanks to the excellent road network here most parishes can be comfortably reached within a few hours drive in any of our dioceses. In Maridi, many remote parishes require an overnight stay when carrying out Confirmations. Indeed on many occasions it can take up to two to three days to reach some of the far flung churches, especially in the rainy season. For example during my last visit to Maridi, it took three hours to visit one Archdeaconry only 17 miles away.

As the dry season comes to an end this year Bishop Justin has just completed a tiring Confirmation journey around the Diocese confirming a total of 476 people – that’s nearly double the number carried out in Down & Dromore Diocese last year when Bishop Miller confirmed 240 people. This is indeed very encouraging news for the Episcopal Church of the Sudan.
