Despite no longer being the focus of international news, Nepal continues to struggle to recover from last month’s devastating earthquake. The country still needs our prayers and our Global Partners still need our support.

One month on from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that killed over 8000 people and destroyed many homes, the Nepal government and international agencies are still struggling to provide the necessary relief to those affected. With the onset of the monsoon due in the next week or two, shelter and food continue to be the major priorities.

Emergency Aid is never enough
In a recent address to the United Nations General Assembly, the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke about the eight million Nepalis whose lives had been changed ‘beyond recognition’. He also highlighted the impact of the earthquake on Nepal’s already fragile infrastructure:

Nepal has been torn apart, years of development gains destroyed. Basic social services, in particular healthcare and education, have been interrupted. Tourism and communication have all suffered highly.

Mr Ban called on member states to invest in Nepal for the long-haul as it looks ahead to years of rebuilding and recovery, saying, ‘Emergency aid is never enough.’

Nepal Earthquake Response Appeal
So far, over £10,000 has been raised through CMSI’s Nepal appeal, with more pledged. We’re hugely thankful to the many parishes and individuals who have supported the appeal, each donating anything from £10 to £2000 to help our partners in their work. We hope to transfer the first tranche of funds in the next week or two. We’ll provide an update on the things our Global Partners hope to do with the funds.

In the meantime, we’ve been asked by our partners to encourage you to please keep praying… ..for Nepal
..for the government
..for the relief efforts
..for those still living in fear of further earthquakes and aftershocks
..for those who still don’t have adequate shelter
..for more support to come from the international community
..for our Global Partners – SD Church and HDCS – as they continue to respond
..for the Zimmerman family and others you might know in Nepal
..for the Church – to be a source of hope and love in the midst of much suffering.

Do please pass on these prayer requests and encourage others to support the appeal.

Thank you for your partnership in mission with our brothers and sisters in Nepal.
