The main Global Partner working with CMS Ireland in Rwanda is the Diocese of Kibungo.
Currently there are over 180,000 Anglicans in Rwanda, with that number growing rapidly each year. The church has its roots in the Ruanda Mission, which was initially established in Rwanda in 1925.
As a result of decades of inter-ethnic conflict and the 1994 genocide, the Church has a significant role to play in healing and reconciliation. The Church also continues to be involved in rural development, medical work, vocational training, and education.
Kibungo Diocese, in the South East of Rwanda is a member of the Eglise Episcopal du Rwanda. Operating under the leadership of Bishop Josias Sendegeya, the diocese is reaching out to people in its community as it plays its part in the rebuilding process for Rwanda.
The Programmes:
Reconciliation and rehabilitation have shaped the agenda of the Church as it has sought to live the transforming message of Christ in the midst of local communities. This means that evangelism, discipleship, leadership training, community development and fighting poverty have been central to the ministry and mission of the diocese.
As such, CMS Ireland has looked to support our partners by:
- Supporting the construction of a new training centre;
- Partnering in the building of a new diocesan office – which is used as base to coordinate the evangelism, community development and education work of the Church;
- Investing in the establishment of youth camps – which have provided discipleship opportunities for young people;
- Funding a poverty alleviation programme – working through a grinding mill project.
Through these things the local church is looking to demonstrate the love of Christ in action and equip leaders for the future.
