Uganda Christian University (UCU) is a private church-founded university with approximately 6,000 students.
Its main campus is in the town of Mukono, 23 kilometers east of Uganda’s capital city, Kampala. UCU was founded in 1997 by decision of the Anglican Church of Uganda from its premier theological seminary/college Bishop Tucker Theological College, founded in 1913 and named after the pioneer missionary Bishop Alfred Tucker. The University Chancellor is the Archbishop of Uganda, the Most Rev. Henry Luke Orombi, with the day to day management and direction being guided by the vice-chancellor, Rev. Prof. Stephen Noll.
UCU has expanded its programmes to include theology, education, social work, business, law, mass communication, development studies, information technology, and nursing. It has innovated a number of modular courses in education, counselling, organisational leadership, maternal health and health administration.
Though the main campus remains at Mukoko, smaller subsidiary campuses around Uganda are being created to allow more students to access the courses.
CMS Ireland has a history of partnership with UCU, spanning back to 2002 when Norman and Isobel Jackson, CMS Ireland Mission Partners, were seconded to work there from the diocese of Ruwenzori where they were based.
More recently, up until 2009, former CMS Ireland Mission Partners Jason and Louise Mehl were based at the University. Jason worked as the Sports Director and Louise was involved in the pastoral care of visiting students.
Our partnership with UCU is still in its infancy – we believe that by partnering with a Higher Education institution we can help support the broader church in Uganda as it looks to inspire and shape a new generation of leaders within Uganda.
