Diocese of Egypt

 

The Diocese of Egypt stretches across a vast area in North Africa and takes in eight countries. CMSI’s partnership with the diocese is mostly focussed in Egypt – particularly on theological training and work with Sudanese refugees.

The diocese is led by Bishop Mouneer Anis (also the Presiding Bishop of Jerusalem and the Middle East) who sees the role of the Church as profoundly missional and is working to help local Christians become effective disciples and witnesses for Christ.

The Church is looking to move from “maintenance to mission” and its four main goals are:

1. To reach the unreached for Christ
2. To apply a holistic approach in mission
3. To be a bridging church with other churches and faith groups
4. To equip both clergy and laity for mission, ministry and leadership

​

The sheer size of the Diocese means that opportunities for mission and ministry are enormous. Over the past 10-15 years, CMSI and parishes in Ireland have supported work among Sudanese refugees in Cairo, healthcare in Sadat City, education and family work in Port Said and the Gambella Anglican Centre in Ethiopia. CMSI’s 2007 Children’s Resource (Annual Project), Sands of Time focused on the work of Ain Shams Community Development Centre.

 

Currently, thanks to support from Hillsborough Parish (Down and Dromore), CMSI is supporting four Sudanese students who are studying at the Nuba Bible Institute in Cairo. Through this initiative, the Church in Ireland is supporting the Church in Egypt as it supports the Church in Sudan!
