Solar, so good

Back in 2017, CMSI mission partner Paul Baker was serving at Kiwoko Hospital (KH) with his family, and he came up with a plan of installing solar panels, with the aim of reducing the hospital’s annual electricity bill as well as their carbon footprint. In a country like Uganda where sunshine is in plenty, it seems like a no brainer! Paul’s foresight has meant that the KH Solar Project which started during his watch, is now making a significant impact on energy bills and ultimately releasing funds to be spent on direct patient care. This is an exciting project that Paul’s former Ugandan colleagues are running with and implementing.

Solar electricity is green, renewable energy and what is taking place at KH is a wonderful example of how one of our Global Partners is contributing to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. Uganda, like many countries around the world, is feeling the effects of climate change and by switching to cleaner and greener sources of energy, it will have a positive impact upon their environment. Solar panels can save lives!

From the initial investment of installing 40 solar panels in 2017/18, to date the hospital has managed to purchase a total of 72 panels with three inverters, which is yielding huge savings. In the hospital’s recent newsletter, Laureen Babirye (Business Development Manager), pictured below, wrote:

“Projects like these cost a lot of money to implement, but will make a huge difference going forward”.

More panels and inverters are needed which come at a cost, so if you are interested in supporting this very worthwhile Solar Project, please get in touch with Friends of Kiwoko Hospital.

Ultimately, as a Christian hospital in rural Uganda, their desire is not only to deliver excellent patient care, but to impact their community and nation for Christ. Continue praying for the staff and management of KH that they will shine the love and light of God in the darkness, so that men and women will come to know Jesus, the light of the world!

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
