Advent Silence

In Matthew chapter 11, we read the following words from Jesus:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Advent is often more challenging than lent. It is very full, with church services, school plays, family gatherings and preparing gifts for our loved ones. On the other hand, our Global Partner’s celebrations for Advent are more about sharing, declaring and coming together. There is much that we can learn from our brothers and sisters around the world.

It’s easy to be overburdened at Christmas - but Mary, the mother of Jesus, carried a child in silence, pregnant with God’s presence and promise. The Prophet Isaiah (Ch 30, v15b) declares:

“In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.”

Silence nourishes and strengthens us spiritually.

The Peace that God brings is much deeper than every day activities; it is His presence within us. Advent gives us the chance to find space for Jesus, and be filled with His presence.

So this Advent, may we allow ourselves times of silence, to be filled with God’s life giving Word!
