Lessons in Joy: What Kenya Taught Me About Faith and Contentment

Returning home from Nairobi with a heart full of gratitude, Emma realised that her time in Kenya didn’t just change her perspective—it completely transformed how she understood community, faith, and what it truly means to live with joy.

"As I reflect on my time in Kenya, I realise that I have come home having received far more than I could ever have given. The people I met have taught me lessons that I know will stay with me for the rest of my life. Their kindness, resilience, generosity and unwavering faith have challenged my perspective and encouraged me to look at life differently.

I have returned home with a renewed appreciation for the simple things in life and a deeper understanding that joy is not found in possessions, but in people, community and faith. I was continually humbled by the generosity of those who had so little materially, yet were always willing to share what they had with those around them. Whether it was offering food, gifts, time or simply a warm welcome, their selflessness was a powerful reminder of what it means to love others well.

One moment that perfectly captured this for me was watching children playing football with a ball made from scrunched-up paper and string. When I asked about it, they simply smiled and said, “We improvise.” There was no complaint or self-pity—just gratitude, creativity and joy. It was such a simple moment, yet it challenged me deeply and reminded me that contentment is often a choice rather than a circumstance.

Above all, this experience has reminded me that God’s blessings are so often found in and through the people He places in our lives, rather than in material possessions. I leave Kenya feeling incredibly grateful for every conversation, every friendship and every lesson I have learned. The warmth, faith and generosity of the people I met have left a lasting mark on my heart, and I pray that I will carry those lessons with me in the future."
