Nepal Flood Emergency Update 27/8/26

Dear Friends, please find below a brief update on the recent flood in Nepal.

Kapil Sharma (Executive Director of HDCS) emailed me this morning asking for prayers and financial support, “Many of you will have heard about the devastation and loss of life that happened yesterday as a massive flash flood swept down the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, affecting several districts.

What we know so far according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Authority (NDRRMA)

• 162 confirmed deaths, with identification of some victims still pending

• Thousands of people are still missing including 400 tourists and 85 security personnel

• Many roads, including the main Prithivi Highway are closed or damaged

• 35 road bridges and 45 suspension bridges have been destroyed

• 14 hydropower projects were affected

These updates reveal widespread devastation and disruption of essential services. HDCS is now planning how to respond effectively in the short and longer term. Initially we will be supporting affected communities with urgent Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) kits and items to help with temporary shelter. We are also in direct contact with the Ministry of Health as to how we can coordinate medical support through our hospitals in Lamjung and Chitwan."

Bijata at SDSS has also been in touch saying they are launching a disaster response.

The affected areas are north of Kathmandu only a few hours from the roads the CMSI Team travelled last November. Seeing the devastating footage online and on news channels is the more shocking when we remember the towns we passed through in the mid-Himalaya, many of them situated close to rivers at the bottom of huge ravines.

We also visited the HDCS Namuna Community hospital at Lamjung, meeting the Director Hemanta Shrestha below left) and his wife Shoba (below right), who have a lot of experience of setting up mobile emergency medical camps and relief programmes.
