Joanne continues to facilitate weekly Trauma Healing training in Ibba, South Sudan. The Bible-based sessions help participants to reflect on their experiences and begin the long, slow process of healing some of the brokenness they have identified.

After the completion of a recent course at Bishop Levi College, yassin Hassan Idriss shared some feedback.

"My name is yassin Hassan Idriss, and I come from a country torn apart by conflict and war. For years, I lived in fear, constantly on edge, witnessing unimaginable violence and loss. I lost family members, friends, and a sense of safety. The trauma I experienced left deep scars on my heart and mind, making it difficult for me to trust others or even feel joy in the simplest moments.

When I first heard about the trauma healing program, I was skeptical. I had tried various ways to cope—self-isolation, anger, and sadness—but nothing seemed to work. However, out of desperation, I decided to give it a chance. I walked into that first session carrying the weight of my experiences, unsure of what to expect.

What I found was a safe space filled with understanding and compassion. The facilitators were trained professionals who had a deep understanding of trauma and its effects. They guided us through our pain, encouraging us to share our stories, our grief, and our fears. For the first time, I felt seen and heard. I learned that I was not alone in my suffering and that it was okay to feel vulnerable.

Through various exercises—art, storytelling, and group discussions—I began to unravel the tightly wound threads of my trauma. I learned coping strategies and tools to manage my emotions. I discovered the power of forgiveness, not just towards others but also towards myself. I realized that healing is not linear; it’s a journey filled with ups and downs, but every step forward is a victory.

One of the most transformative moments for me was when we participated in a group ceremony to bring our pain to the cross. Together, we lit candles for those pains we had and shared memories. In that moment, I felt a sense of release and connection. It was as if the weight of my grief was shared among all of us, and I found solace in knowing that we were in this together.

Today, I stand here as a testament to the power of healing. While the scars of war will always be a part of my story, they no longer define me. I have learned to embrace life again, to find joy in small moments, and to nurture hope for the future. I am now an advocate for peace and healing in my community, using my voice to share the importance of trauma recovery and mental health.”
